TinkerTaylorTV Bespoke Wedding Filming

I had the pleasure of meeting recently, Sam Taylor, Creative Director for TinkerTaylorTV. Sam and her team provide what I can only describe as absolutely amazing professional and exclusive wedding videos.  I recommend Sam and her team 110%. Here is a little about what they do:

“You know those special, magical moments that make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Happy, buzzing times that make you grin like a fool, make your tummy flip and your heart sing.  You wish you could bottle that feeling, bottle it and keep it forever.  Take a quiet moment, pour yourself a glass of wine, flip open the laptop and watch how we do just that – bottle the laughter, tears,  kisses, smiles  in our uniquely romantic, cinematic wedding films. ”

Choosing the right Church Wedding Photographer

Since the introduction of the digital camera there have been more and more people claiming to be a church wedding photographer. For you, identifying a suitable photographer is very important, but also a real minefield. For the untrained eye and certainly for anyone who has not been married before, this is a very difficult process, after all, you cannot afford to get it wrong.

Unlike any other kind of photography, with weddings you really only get one opportunity to capture the images. It is simply not possible to ask the vicar or priest to repeat a process because the photographer missed the shot. The groom is only going to be told “you may now kiss the bride” once, therefore it is absolutely vital you hire someone with not just the technical knowhow, but someone who understands the uniqueness of weddings, someone who knows what pictures work, when to get them and the obstacles that church weddings present – especially with mixed lighting.

A novice may well know very well how their camera works, but lacks the understanding and ability to shoot weddings. This is particularly true for ‘documentary style’ whereby the end product is an album that tells the entire story of the day, a novice will not be able to deliver this because of the missed shots.

Here are some important things to help you choose the right church wedding photographer:

  • Most important of all – can they show you a complete wedding album that depicts the entire story of a wedding day? An album such as this tells you several things a) you get their ability to shoot an entire wedding day; b) you are able to examine not just their best shots. Albums that are put together comprising their best shots are okay for seeing their range/style, but a complete album tells you their strengths and weaknesses
  • Make sure the album you are viewing is in print format, rather than on a tablet or laptop. Copyright theft can be a problem in the industry, so by viewing the high quality prints in album format, only the photographer who took these are likely to have the hi-resolution files. Images and pictures on photography websites can easily be downloaded and passed off as their own, when in fact they are someone else’s work.
  • Does the church wedding photographer put you at ease and inspire you with confidence? Remember, you are choosing someone to share one of the happiest days of your life, you want a photographer around that does not cause you additional anxiety or stress.
  • Is the business registered at Companies House? For example, bigdayphotographer.co.uk is owned by David Vidgen Ltd registered number 05763312 in England and Wales. This means that it is a reputable business, rather than perhaps just a hobby or sideline. It is a legal requirement for a business to indicate their company number on their website.
  • Price… remember if you pay peanuts you get monkeys – and in the wedding photography industry this is particularly true. An appropriate fee for a good wedding photographer is around the £2k mark. This would include full coverage (rather than just designated times), a good premium quality album, and perhaps some nice extra’s like a canvas or print. Pricing can also be a minefield, so make sure there are no hidden charges.
  • Do they offer a money back guarantee? In other words, if you do not like their work, you simply return the album/prints etc and you get your money back. This is rarely seen in the wedding photography industry, but again, someone who is confident in their work, and is confident they can capture the images you want, can offer this security. We do!
  • Style – does the photographer shoot in the style you desire? This may seem a little obvious and simple, but it is very important that you get what you want! The key to this is to identify the style of photography first i.e. documentary, traditional, or just group shots.
  • Can you pay by debit or credit card? Again, this is a service any true professional offers. Hobbyists and those who perhaps ‘do’ photography as a sideline are less likely to provide such services. It costs approx 45p to process a debit card transaction and approx 1% for credit cards. If a photographer say’s card processing fees are expensive, this is not the case. Also, paying by credit card gives you extra protection, should you not receive the goods or services.
  • What are the photographers terms and conditions? You should ask to inspect these, ideally they should be a signed and dated document that is easy to hand. If the photographer asks for a few days to get this to you, it suggests that they don’t have one.
  • Does the photographer have Public Liability Insurance and Public Indemnity Insurance? Both forms of insurance protect both you and the photographer in many ways. Professional photographers will have such insurances in place in case of injury, damage to property, or equipment failure.

These are all little tips and tricks that should help you choose the right church wedding photographer. This article has been written by David Vidgen, owner of bigdayphotographer.co.uk.

Expert Wedding Photographer

Welcome to bigdayphotographer.co.uk – my name is David Vidgen and I am an expert wedding photographer who specialises in documentary weddings at grand venues such historic castles, spectacular churches and large hotels.

I believe that I have the best job in the world, I love photography and for me capturing one of the happiest days of peoples’ lives is a true privilege and one that I do not take lightly. As a consequence I strive to capture some breathtaking pictures which are then illustrated in one of the worlds finest wedding albums.

As an expert wedding photographer I am able to work quickly and quietly, taking beautiful pictures effortlessly and without causing disruption or concern for any guests or wedding party members. Being discreet means that I can capture individuals when they are relaxed and enjoying the moment. Of course, I do take the formal stuff, but most images are in documentary style, capturing the day as it unfolds rather than being a bossy photographer and trying to direct the day.

My wedding package is tailored to give complete piece of mind with no hidden extras:

  • A pre-wedding photoshoot lasting approx 2 hours
  • All day coverage on your wedding day – unlike all other photographers I do no specify time limits
  • Fun ‘Mug Shot Booth’ to capture guests in a fun and quirky manner – this is then edited to create a large print
  • 16″ x 12″ premium leather Jorgensen Album
  • Complimentary Print or Canvas
  • Hi resolution files on DVD at no extra cost

Total Cost with no hidden extras £1550

Pre-Wedding Shoot
The purpose of this is to ensure that both you and your partner are comfortable round me and the camera. It is important that your wedding day is not the first time we work together, so the 2 hr advance session is perfect for easing any stress or anxiety. You also get some really great professional portraits of you both.

“The most important thing for me, is for you to be happy and ensure that you have the images you desire.”

All Day Coverage
When you book me, you hire me for the entire day – at your complete disposal. If you want pictures of the bride on the morning preparing for the big occasion, these can be done. The same applies to you wanting the first dance captured, this can be done regardless of the time it takes place. The most important thing for me, is for you to be happy and ensure that you have the images you desire.

Mug Shot Booth
Traditionally, obtaining one large group shot featuring all the guests present on your wedding day is painstaking and often very stressful for the bride and groom. individuals are never where you want them – and although you would like everyone present, others don’t necessary share your enthusiasm or the importance to be involved in such a shot (even with a £60 per head, wedding breakfast on offer!). A fun alternative (normally after the speeches) is to have a small area of your wedding reception venue assigned for individuals and groups to come and have their portrait pictures taken (I call this a mug shot booth). All the pictures are then collated to form one large print or canvas of all persons present on your day (not just those at the ceremony).

Ideas for your Wedding Reception

Wedding Reception Ideas

by David Vidgen, Birmingham Wedding Photographer:

  1. Instead of a guest book, purchase a large piece of white square or landscape cardboard, cut-out a 10″ x 8″ square in the middle (this is for a photo) and ask your guests to write warm messages around the border. To finish, frame appropriately. The picture can be from your wedding day, or perhaps the pre-wedding shoot.
  2. Allocate a small room with a camcorder, and ask your guests to record personal messages. Edit accordingly…
  3. Instead of having group shots that your guests really do not want to be apart, in between the wedding breakfast and the evening reception (this is often a lull), get your photographer to have a small lighting area set-up and take individual/group ‘mug shots’ – these can then be put into a collage and framed accordingly. Allow your guests to be themselves, pull funny faces etc.
  4. The best wedding cake I have ever shot was a Marks and Spencers cake (as featured in the wedding portfolio / 13th Image) – this cost less that £100, but is beautiful because it is decorated with stunning white roses.
  5. Magicians are a great way to entertain your guests while coffee is being served, or as guests arrive.
  6. If your reception area has some beautiful grounds, why not hire large outdoor games such as Chess and Jenga.

Some other useful tips for your wedding day…

  1. A great way to save money… Do you have a skill that you could trade with a wedding supplier? For example, I didn’t pay for my wedding flowers because I built the florist a website in exchange… this saved me £thousands
  2. Do you have some old gold jewellery that is of no sentimental value lying about? Why not trade in this towards the cost of your wedding rings. Websites such as stonejewellers.co.uk allow you to do this.
  3. Brides…at some point during the day you are going to need to toilet. The best way to go is facing the toilet system…it’s much easier on the dress!

The finest albums in the world…

What’s the point of having stunning wedding photo’s if you are going to show them in a poor quality album?

We use Jorgensen Albums of Australia – these are probably the finest albums on the market and really do give your pictures the WOW factor.

Pro Bound Jorgensen Album

The quality of a Jorgensen Album is second to none, a pro bound album above comes with metal edges (to stop dog ends), ability to add flip pages, stitched covers, photo covers, plus lots more.

They really are stunning albums…
